The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 14.54 points, or 0.06 percent, from Wednesday to 23,875.75.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 3.94 points, or 0.23 percent, at 1,714.98.

Metal product and mining issues led notable gainers, while iron and steel, and machinery-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
