TOKYO, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened essentially flat Tuesday as Wall Street's upbeat lead overnight encouraged buying, while the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar saw some investors offload issues.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 4.37 points, or 0.02 percent, from Monday to 23,173.73.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 1.97 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,632.69.

Pharmaceutical and transportation equipment issues led notable decliners, while gainers comprised transportation and insurance-linked issues. Enditem
