Tokyo stocks open high on Wall Street's overnight lead

TOKYO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday tracking U.S. shares higher overnight, helped by Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell's upbeat remarks made to lawmakers about the U.S. economy.

In the opening minutes after the morning bell, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 146.27 points, or 0.62 percent, from Monday to 23,832.25.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 0.05 point at 1,719.69.

Information and communication, securities house and marine transportation-linked issues comprised notable gainers in early trade.

Markets here were closed on Tuesday for a national holiday.
