Tokyo stocks opened higher on Monday in cautious trade ahead of the Bank of Japan's policy decision later in the day, with additional asset-purchasing widely expected.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was up 0.89 percent or 171.27 points at 19,433.27 in early trade, while the broader Topix index edged up 0.47 percent or 6.75 points to 1,428.04.
