Tokyo stocks open higher tracking gains in US shares

TOKYO, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Monday following U.S. shares rising late last week as optimism rose for the global economic outlook.

As of 9:15 am, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 134.25 points, or 0.63 percent, from Friday to 21,585.10.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 5.64 points, or 0.35 percent, to 1,608.27.

Metal product, oil and coal product, and glass and ceramics product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
