Tokyo stocks opened lower on Monday after a rout on Wall Street as banking shares wobbled on contagion fears, after the failure of regional lender Silicon Valley Bank.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.92 percent, or 259.57 points, at 27,884.40 in early trade, while the broader Topix index lost 1.02 percent, or 20.68 points, to 2,010.90.
