Tokyo stocks open lower amid heightened fears of global recession

TOKYO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday after the U.S. Treasury yield curve inverting for a second time overnight heightened concerns about a looming global economic recession.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 74.12 points, or 0.36 percent, from Thursday to 20,331.53.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 4.75 points, or 0.32 percent, at 1,479.10.

Nonferrous metal, rubber product, and glass and ceramics product-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
