Tokyo stocks open lower as investors await outcome of Fed meeting

TOKYO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened marginally lower Wednesday as investors awaited the conclusion of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting later in the day, with expectations high for an additional rate cut henceforth.

As markets opened here, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 16.13 points, or 0.07 percent, from Tuesday to 21,985.19.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 6.05 points, or 0.37 percent, at 1,608.53.

Mining, oil and coal product, and iron and steel-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
