Tokyo stocks open lower on Wall Street's lead, virus concerns

TOKYO, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday following Wall Street's weak lead late last week and amid ongoing concerns about coronavirus cases surging across the United States.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 249.75 points, or 1.10 percent, from Wednesday to 22,501.86.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 16.33 points, or 1.04 percent, at 1,556.63.

Precision instrument, marine transportation, and glass and ceramic product issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.

Japanese markets were closed on Thursday and Friday for national holidays.
