US dollar rises as yen sinks

NEW YORK, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar appreciated in late trading on Monday amid noticeable losses in Japanese yen.

The yen weakened after the Bank of Japan on Monday announced a bond-buying operation in a bid to keep long-term interest rates from rising.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, rose 0.31 percent at 99.0920.

In late New York trading, the euro rose to 1.0993 U.S. dollars from 1.0989 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound fell to 1.3098 dollars from 1.3187 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.7501 U.S. dollar from 0.7522 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 123.60 Japanese yen, higher than 122.10 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar increased to 0.9351 Swiss franc from 0.9308 Swiss franc, and it increased to 1.2527 Canadian dollars from 1.2474 Canadian dollars.
