US stocks open lower amid holiday shopping season

NEW YORK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened lower on Friday, as investors observed the market following Thanksgiving Day. Meanwhile, Black Friday has ushered in the latest holiday shopping season.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 85.26 points, or 0.30 percent, to 28,078.74. The S&P 500 was down 5.40 points, or 0.17 percent, to 3,148.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index decreased 20.22 points, or 0.23 percent, to 8,684.96.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors traded on an upbeat note, with consumer discretionary rising over 0.8 percent shortly after the opening, outperforming the rest.

Shares of Walmart and Amazon.com rose over 0.7 percent and nearly 0.2 percent respectively, as Wall Street continued to watch the online retailers amid a robust holiday shopping season.

Online shopping on Thanksgiving Day, or Thursday, surged around 19 percent compared to the previous year, CNBC quoted data from Adobe as saying.

The U.S. stock market closed on Thursday for a national holiday.

The three benchmark indexes ended higher on Wednesday, following Tuesday's fresh closing highs, as investors digested a batch of data, including the moderately higher U.S. growth rate in the third quarter.
