US stocks open much higher on hopes virus spread limited

Wall Street stocks opened higher Tuesday, surging for a second straight session amid hopes governments are making progress in combatting the spread of the coronavirus.

About five minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 23,469.83, up nearly 800 points or 3.5 percent.

The broad-based S&P 500 jumped 3.1 percent to 2,744.91, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gained 2.6 percent to 8,115.27.
