"Taiwan independence" forces are the threat to cross-Strait peace, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks after the Kuomintang Party of China Chairman Chiang Chi-chen described the Chinese mainland as the "major threat" Taiwan faces in a Reuters interview.

The current cross-Strait situation is still complicated and severe, said Zhu.

Only by crushing any attempt to split Taiwan from China can the region achieve peace and stability, Zhu said.

The spokesperson also called on relative sides to distinguish right from wrong, and do more to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, enhance the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Strait, and maintain peace and stability in the region.
