Bu Zhipeng, 28, was strolling with his family on a Sunday afternoon when he heard cries for help.

Bu handed his 3-year-old son over to his wife and raced over to a bridge where he saw a child sinking.

First Bu had to scale a 2-meter riverside fence. Next he plunged into a mud puddle about 40 meters from the struggling victim.

He grabbed a tree branch and used it to test the terrain as he waded toward the danger.

Bu finally grabbed the child's arms and yanked it out of the mire.

Chinese social media posts did not report if it was a boy or a girl.

The two then gingerly returned ashore together where Bu removed his orange work uniform and wrapped the shivering child.

He handed the youngster over to a policeman and left the scene without giving his name.

The child's parents traced down Bu through his outfit. He refused all gifts.

"It's a relief no one was hurt," Bu said. "I've just done what I should do."
