Seven of the world's top 10 ports in terms of both cargo and container throughput are in China, China Central Television reported on Tuesday, quoting data from the Transport Ministry.

Data showed China has 2,530 berths that can dock ships with a displacement of at least 10,000 metric tons during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020). Container throughput contributed by railway-waterway transport rose by 20 percent on average every year.

A batch of unmanned ports have been built from 2016 to 2020 including Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal, Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal and Jingtang Port, in particular, the fourth phase of Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port, the world's largest unmanned container terminal which is expecting a yearly throughout of 4.18 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) this year.

Investment on ports in China will reach 364.4 billion yuan ($55.53 billion) from 2016 through 2020. Five port clusters in the Bohai Sea Region, Yangtze River Delta, South-East Coastal Areas, Pearl River Delta and South-West Coastal Areas have been built.

China has achieved major progress during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) in qualified development of its ports, having embarked on building world-leading ports with green and intelligent features. This is of significant importance to unblock seaborne trade and global logistics, said Chen Ying from the Port Administrative Office of the Transport Ministry.
