A passenger train struck and killed nine railway workers near Jinchang city, Northwest China's Gansu Province, on Friday morning, according to the local railway authority.

The cause of the collision remains unknown and the rescue operation is still underway.

The accident occurred when the train was on a 4,100-kilometer trip from Northwest China’s Urumqi to the eastern city of Hangzhou. Jinchang is the seventh stop along the route.
