The number of elderly people in Beijing rose from about 2.63 million in 2012 to 3.49 million at the end of 2018, accounting for 25.4 percent of the capital's registered population.

The average life expectancy of Beijing residents increased by 0.05 years to 82.20 years by the end of 2018.

The report also indicated that elderly people in the capital tend to live a longer life. There are about 584,000 seniors at or above the age of 80, an increase of 27,000 from last year. Also, the number of registered centenarian residents in Beijing is expected to exceed 1,000 for the first time by the end of this year.

The city is going to roll out a number of activities to look after its elderly citizens including providing free therapeutic counselling, organizing lectures and financing poverty-stricken families.
