At least seven people were killed and three others injured as torrential rain battered the city of Heyuan, south China's Guangdong Province, bringing life to a standstill and disrupting traffic and telecommunications.

One person was also unaccounted for in the bad weather.

More than 110,000 people were affected and 956 houses collapsed in three counties in Heyuan, the local government said.

Authorities have dispatched more than 1,000 personnel as part of a rescue and disaster relief operation.

Schools in the city have been closed since Monday afternoon.
