The US is to blame for obstacles and negative impacts on all aspects of China-US relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a routine press briefing on Tuesday.

Geng was responding to a question about safety reminders China has recently issued about living in the United States.

Chinese ministries have issued safety reminders to Chinese citizens who study or travel in the US and at China-funded institutions in the US, to raise safety awareness.

The safety reminders were made in response to the current situation, Geng said.

The US has politicized normal bilateral educational exchanges and cooperation on the grounds of so-called “China interference” or “China infiltration.” This harms cultural exchanges between the two countries, Geng said.

Geng stressed that China has always supported exchanges of international students and cooperation in education and the humanities with other countries. However, such cooperation should be based on common will and mutual respect, instead of one-sided behavior.

China has to issue reminders as part of its responsibility, Geng said, because US law enforcement agencies have repeatedly used various methods to harass Chinese citizens in the US, such as entry and exit checks and on-site interviews.

China always holds a positive and open attitude towards normal personnel exchanges between the two countries, but such exchanges should be based on mutual respect, Geng added.
