BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- An intelligent monitoring system at the Miyun Reservoir in the northeast suburbs of Beijing is near completion, as it marks its 60th anniversary on Tuesday, according to the reservoir's law enforcement team.

The system will be put into use after the docking of equipment and debugging. It integrates functions of intelligent identification, fire prevention, broadcasting and illegal evidence collection, with one command center and eight sub-platforms, said Yu Xingping, head of the team.

"With over 390 cameras, the system can achieve full coverage of monitoring around the reservoir," Yu said, adding that when suspicious acts happen, the staff at the command center can immediately give feedback to the eight sub-platforms to improve the efficiency of handling illegal acts.

To protect the water, a 300 km-long fence has been installed around the reservoir for closed-off management, and more than 2,000 farmers have been employed to join the patrol.

The construction of the reservoir, with a capacity of around 4.4 billion cubic meters, started in 1958 and was completed in 1960. Since 1985, the reservoir has changed its main function from flood control to supplying water to Beijing.
