With the official opening of two sections of Metro Line 8 (southern section of phase-3 and parts of phase-4), as well as the western extension of Metro Line 6 at the end of last year, the total mileage of Beijing's rail transit has reached 636.8 km. So far, Beijing has 22 metro lines and 391 stations in operation, among which 59 are transfer stations.

Meanwhile, the authorities have increased the application of new concepts in planning. For instance, when formulating plans for the section from the South Sixth Ring Road to the new Beijing Daxing International Airport, the authorities integrated the New Airport Line, New Airport Expressway and Beijing-Xiongan intercity railway into one corridor, which saves land use. Through groove-sharing between the New Airport Line and the New Airport Expressway, the corridor width is narrowed from 95 meters to 79 meters, thus saving land use by 20 hectares.

The phase-3 and phase-4 sections of the Metro Line 8 is a railway connecting downtown Beijing to the northeastern part of Beijing's Daxing district, with a total length of about 20 km. It has 11 stations from Zhushikou to Yinhai. Its opening provides greater convenience for the residents in the southern part of Beijing.

The western extension of the Metro Line 6 starts from Line S1's terminal station Jinanqiao in the west and ends at the Wuluju Station, with a total length of around 10.6 km and 6 underground stations. Its opening further enhances the accessibility of Line 6 and relieves the passenger flow pressure on Line 1.

In addition to the newly opened lines, formerly suspended stations including the National Art Museum Station of Line 8, Fatou Station of Line 7, Beiyunhedong Station of Line 6 and the Yizhuang Railway Station of Yizhuang Line have also been opened.

According to the "Beijing City Master Plan (2016-2035)," the mileage of rail transit of the city will increase to around 1,000 km by 2020 and to no less than 2,500 km by 2035.
