Beijing has stressed that China-U.S. relations should not become a tool for manipulation by certain political forces for their own political interests. The bilateral ties are vital to the well-being of the two peoples as well as world peace and stability as a whole.

The remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin at a regular media briefing on Thursday as a further response to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's anti-China speech.

Pompeo's speech at the Richard Nixon Library, named after the former U.S. president who pressed the start button to normalize relations with China about five decades ago, urged an end to the long-held engagement approach toward China and instigated "the free world" to stand up against it.

Pompeo's attack on China and his negation of the achievement in bilateral ties, according to Wang, is an attempt to provoke confrontation between different ideologies.

Cooperation and exchange between China and the U.S. in the past five decades has brought tangible benefits not only to the two peoples, but also to the people of the whole world, Wang said, noting it as an undeniable truth.

The remarks made by Pompeo have also drawn the ire of American experts. Former U.S. senior diplomat Charles W. Freeman criticized Pompeo's comments, terming them a total twist to history and facts.

It served domestic political agenda and his own political ambition, instead of foreign policy goals, said Freeman in an interview with Xinhua.

Freeman also sparred over the result of U.S. engagement policy with China.

"Overall, the maneuver was brilliant," he said. The U.S. engagement policy with China bolstered the global balance and helped keep the peace, and cooperation between Washington and Beijing in the 1980s contributed significantly to the end of the Cold War.
