The Beijing Municipal Education Commission held a news conference to discuss comprehensively improving schools’ physical education (PE) in Beijing on Monday.
The conference stressed that students should participate in daily physical exercises for more than one hour inside and outside school.
The commission issued 20 new measures on strengthening physical education in elementary and high schools and enhancing students' physical health.
The new measures include building a scientific and full-fledged PE system; increasing PE hours to ensure after-school sports time; cultivating daily physical exercise; strengthening the ranks of PE teachers through multiple channels and attracting coaches, retired athletes and other high-caliber people to schools; and ameliorating sports facilities in some schools.
The conference clarified that students should take PE classes at least five times a week in elementary schools, four to five times in junior middle schools, and three to five times in senior high schools. The time must not be reduced or diverted for other use. On days with no PE classes, no less than 45 minutes of extracurricular exercises should be arranged. A long break for at least 25 minutes should be ensured every week for sports.
To facilitate the implementation, comprehensive monitoring, intervention and evaluation on students' health should be conducted. Each student will have a personalized electronic health record, to which early warning and targeted guidance will be given on a regular basis.
