The total number of shared bikes in Beijing has dropped to 1.9 million as of April, 20 percent less than in September 2017, reported by Beijing Business Today on Tuesday.

According to officials of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, the number of shared bikes was 2.35 million last September, its peak.

"Although Beijing still has a large number of shared bikes, half of them are idle and a serious waste of resources", said Hu Haiming in an interview on the governance of the Beijing bike-sharing order.

Bike-sharing is a new kind of transportation, attracting much attention in the past two years. Mobike Company, one of the two biggest bike-sharing companies in China, was acquired last month, raising concerns about the fate of bike-sharing.

The bike-sharing industry is experiencing negative growth in Beijing.

Hu said the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport will continue to control the number of shared bikes and improve operation efficiency of the bike-sharing system.

"Based on the ratio of public transportation to the population in Beijing, 1.1 million shared bikes are enough," said Wang Shu, an engineer from the Beijing Transport Institute.
