On October 25, the “National Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign” City Tour was officially launched in Nanjing. Guided by the office of the Food Safety Commission of the State Council and All-China Women’s Federation, the Campaign is jointly held by China Children and Teenagers Foundation (hereinafter refers to CCTF) and China Nutrition and Health Food Association, and is supported by the Walmart Foundation. The launching ceremony was hosted by Jiangsu Women’s Federation, co-organized by Jiangsu Children Welfare Foundation, Jiangsu Children Welfare Foundation, Nanjing love and care social service center, Nanjing Gaochun Qiqiao Central Primary School, and supported by Jiangsu Food and Drug Administration, Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Nanjing Gaochun District Education Bureau, Gaochun District Women’s Federation and Qiqiao Town Women’s Federation. The City Tour will be last for a month in Nanjing.

Zhu Xisheng, the Secretary-General of CCTF attended the ceremony and expressed gratitude to local organizations. He said, “The food safety issue happened in a Shanghai International School in recent days has caused bad social effects, which once again warned us of the urgency and systematicness of children's food safety work. In order to implement the State Council's food safety work plan and assist the government in establishing a ‘social co-governance food safety management system’, ‘National Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign’ is dedicated to work with social organizations to safeguard the ‘food safety’ for children. As we bring the interesting food safety knowledge to children in Jiangsu Province today, we also want to take this opportunity to further work with relevant institutions here to publicize food safety education in Nanjing, so that more children and families can know about food safety.”

Tang Weimin, Vice Chairman of Jiangsu Children Welfare Foundation expressed her welcome to the guests and gratitude to all people concerning about the “Children’s Food Safety”. She also emphasized that the Campaign in Nanjing is a kind act of caring for children and bearing social responsibility, but also a powerful measure to implement the child development plan and the principle of giving priority to children. This is of great importance to promote children's physical and mental health, maintain social stability and create a harmonious society.

This campaign in Nanjing was sponsored by Walmart Foundation. Reports said that Walmart Foundation has donated over seven million RMB as the special fund for Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign, which donates more than 190 resource bundles in Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province, Guizhou Province, Shenzhen, Yunnan Province, Fujian Province, Qinghai Province and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region; and carries out thirty experience camps in Hangzhou, Nanjing, Nantong and Guiyang. Resource bundles will be distributed to 28 primary schools in Jiangsu Province, and it contains children’s food safety thematic comic books, hands-on learning boxes, touch screen machine, and series of classes. At the same time, the Campaign will carry out ten experience camps in eight primary schools and two communities in Nanjing and Nantong, benefiting about 100,000 children.

Dr. Yan Zhinong, Representative of Walmart Foundation, and the Executive Director of Walmart Food Safety Collaboration Center said, “Walmart Foundation started to funding CCTF in 2016 to jointly launch the ‘National Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign’. This Campaign can bring the rich food safety knowledge into schools and communities in an entertaining way, spreading food safety knowledge to the next generation, which is of great significance to upgrading the overall food safety level in China. In this year, further improvements were made in terms of its richness in content, innovation in form and the depth and breadth of its scale. I believe more children can learn the latest food safety knowledge through this activity, so that the whole society will pay more attention to children's food safety issues.”

At the ceremony, leaders and guests conferred the bronze medal for the “National Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign” education demonstration base to the representatives of 8 donated schools in Nanjing and Nantong, and presented children’s food safety thematic comic books to 2 community representatives.

In order to make the design better fit the content that are necessary to school, children and parents, hosts and organizers met with representatives from base schools to discuss and share thoughts on the development of food safety education. School representatives stressed on the resources including comic books and boxes donated by the Campaign, saying that the Campaign could also add some additional short-video and cartoon resource bundles and teachers training classes since most left-behind children can only learn from teachers.

After the ceremony, Children’s Food Safety Mobile Experience Camp made its pose in Qiqiao Central Primary School. There were five theme experience zones. Some students were reading the children’s food safety thematic comic books; some were learning the “six steps to wash hands” from the hand-wash sensor machine; some were playing the food safety monopoly game in “Comprehensive Experiment Zone” as this game taught them food safety knowledge subtly. The most popular spots should be the VR and AR in the “Food Safety Experience Zone”. Experiencers could wear VR equipment to know about food safety and how to guarantee it while making food in a kitchen. Besides, the AR (Augmented Reality) device could let experiencers to know the traceable process of pork. The trend of “food safety learning” subtly began in Qiqiao Central Primary School with crowded camp, exciting children……

Set aside the experience camp, “National Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign” team invited He Jiguo, expert from the Committee of Experts of National Children’s Food Safety Guard Campaign and Associate Professor of China Agriculture University to provide a food safety class for children. He explained the food safety knowledge to children in a simple way, and removed the related misunderstandings in this profession.

Besides, hosts and organizers visited Nanjing Gaochun Yaxi Central Primary School to donate the comic books and hands-on learning boxes to children in person. To be particular note, Dr. Yan Zhinong shared his life experience with children and encouraged them to study hard to become responsible people in the future.
