China and the US should reduce destabilizing factors in bilateral trade, avoid new trade and investment restrictions, and jointly promote the sound and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, said China’s Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Gao Feng on Thursday.

Gao made the remarks in response to a report by the US-China Business Council that showed tariffs and an uncertain business environment have led to a sharp drop in US exports to China.

He noted China had been the fastest growing market for US exports before the economic friction between the two countries.

“China and the US should take the opportunity of implementing the first phase of the China-US economic and trade agreement to work in the same direction, strengthen cooperation, and manage differences,” Gao said.

“It is of great significance to maintain the economic stability of China and the US amid the epidemic and promote the global economy to get rid of the epidemic as soon as possible,” Gao added.
