Lu said the two Canadian nationals are engaged in activities that endanger China’s national security. Relevant national security agencies in Beijing and northeast China’s Liaoning Province are investigating their cases, and have notified the Canadian side about the situation. The legitimate rights and interests of the two can be ensured.

“The Chinese side is acting according to laws and regulations,” said Lu in response to a reporter’s question if China’s move against Kovrig and Todd is related to the case of Meng Wanzhou.

Todd was investigated by the State Security Bureau of Dandong, northeast China’s Liaoning Province because he was suspected of engaging in activities that endangered China’s national security. The case is under investigation, according to relevant authorities.
