China on Wednesday urged the US to immediately lift sanctions on five Chinese companies and end its “long-arm jurisdiction” and unilateral sanctions against Chinese companies.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a routine press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday after the US added the companies to a trade blacklist for allegedly supporting Russia’s military and defense industrial base.
“The sanctions on the pretext of supporting Russia’s military and defense industrial base neither have a basis in international law nor are authorized by the UN Security Council,” Zhao said. “It is a unilateral sanction and long-arm jurisdiction by the US. China is firmly opposed to this,” China has lodged solemn representations with the US side, Zhao noted.
“China and Russia are conducting normal economic and trade cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, which should not be subject to interference or restriction by any third party,” the ministry spokesperson said. “The US should not undermine China’s legitimate interests in any way when dealing with its relations with Russia.”
China would resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, he said.
“We urge the US to immediately correct its mistakes, lift relevant sanctions and stop long-arm jurisdiction and unilateral sanctions against Chinese companies,” Zhao said.
