The total early season rice production of China this year was 27.29 million tons, an increase of 1.028 million tons from 2019. This increase of 3.9 percent reversed a downward production trend of 7 consecutive years, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Wednesday.

Affected by severe floods in parts of the south, the yield of early season rice declined this year. But thanks to a substantial increase in the planting area, the country’s early season rice production increased.

“Governments at all levels in the main producing areas of early season rice vigorously promoted technologies which effectively motivated farmers to plant early season rice,” said Li Suoqiang, director of the Rural Department of the National Bureau of Statistics.

“The bumper summer grain harvest and the increase in early season rice production have laid the foundation for stable grain production throughout the year,” Li said.
