Fallen national heroes were remembered on China's Martyrs' Day at a ceremony held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Wednesday morning.

Some 1,800 people, including Chinese President Xi Jinping along with other senior leaders and representatives from all walks of life, attended the ceremony and observed a moment of silence.

Martyrs' Day is celebrated on the day before China's National Day on October 1. On the same day in 1949, the foundations for the Monument to the People's Heroes were laid in the downtown Beijing square.

The Chinese president and other Party and state leaders also presented flower baskets to deceased national heroes.
