The return of the Korean Peninsula issue to the political track was hard-won and worth cherishing. China hopes that the DPRK and the United States will continue with their dialogue and is willing to play a constructive role, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said on Thursday.

According to a statement issued by the White House, no agreement was reached in the second summit between DPRK leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump.

White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders pointed out that the two leaders discussed various ways to achieve denuclearization and promote the economy, but the two sides did not reach an agreement at this stage. However, the two delegations look forward to meeting again in the future.

Lu said at the press conference that he would like to hear how the DPRK and the US expressed their views on how to evaluate the meeting in Hanoi.

He said that over the past year, there has been a major turning point in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and the Korean Peninsula issue has returned on the right track towards political settlement. This achievement is hard-won and worth cherishing.

In fact, the developments and setbacks of the Korean Peninsula situation over the past few decades have taught us that insisting on dialogues and consultations are the only ways out, and that only moving in the same direction with each other can guarantee stability and progress, said Lu.

We hoped that the DPRK and the US will continue with their dialogues, expressing goodwill to each other, earnestly respecting each other's legitimate concerns and working together to promote the denuclearization of the Peninsula and the establishment of a peace mechanism on the Peninsula. China is also willing to continue to play a constructive role in this regard, Lu said.

DPRK leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump met Wednesday night in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, for their second summit to discuss concrete ways for peace on the Korean Peninsula and the denuclearization of the Peninsula.
