An objective, rational and inclusive voice will eventually overcome paranoid, fanatical, and zero-sum claims, a spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Thursday, in response to an open letter written by US experts urging the White House and the US Congress not to treat China as an enemy.

Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said that the ministry noticed the letter and commended the rational and objective voices and opinions.

Some 100 Asia experts, including five former US diplomats and scholars, called on the White House and US lawmakers to drop policies which consider China as an enemy because that approach will be counterproductive to US interests and the global economy, in an open letter published in the Washington Post on Wednesday.

China is not the US’ enemy, Geng stressed. “Over four decades, China-US relations have experienced ups and downs and made historic progress, bringing huge benefits to the two peoples and contributing to world peace, stability and prosperity. The 40-year journey proves that China and the US, two great countries totally different from each other in history, culture, social system, and ideology, can realize mutual respect and win-win cooperation on the basis of no conflict and no confrontation,” Geng said.

Geng said cooperation is the only right choice between both sides and cooperation benefits both countries while confrontation can only hurt both. The interests of the two countries are intertwined with a wide range of cooperation. The two countries should not fall into a trap of confrontation, but should realize mutual promotion and joint development, which conforms to the fundamental interests of the two sides and the general expectations of international society, said Geng.

China has confidence in China-US ties, he said. The two peoples have simple and friendly feelings for each other, and the two countries have frequent trade interaction, people-to-people exchanges and regional interaction. The inextricable links between the two sides enhance the resilience of China-US ties, and healthy, stable China-US ties are the common aspiration of our two peoples and an irresistible trend, he said.

“We must not let contradictions and differences define current China-US relations, let alone allowing prejudice and misjudgment to influence future China-US relations,” Geng stressed.

China hopes the US could listen to rational and constructive voices within the US and in international society and join hands to continue to promote stable and far-reaching China-US relations on the basis of coordination, cooperation and stability according to the consensus reached by the two heads of state, and better benefit the two countries and people of the world, he said.
