China has imposed 25 percent tariffs on $16 billion worth of US imports starting at 12:01 pm on August 23, as a countermeasure to a renewed round of 25 percent tariffs by the US on $16 billion of Chinese goods.

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced Thursday it strongly opposes US tariffs and is forced to fight back, an MOFCOM spokesperson said in an online statement.

China will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against US tariffs. By launching the complaint under the WTO dispute settlement mechanism, China is to safeguard free trade and multilateral mechanisms as well as its legitimate rights and interests.

By willfully imposing the tariffs on Thursday, the US has obviously violated WTO rules, according to the statement.
