China did not sit idly by, nor did the country add fuel to the fire, or exploit the situation for selfish gain, foreign ministry spokesperson said in Beijing on Wednesday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a routine press briefing in response to White House national security spokesperson John Kirby’s questioning of China’s impartiality on Tuesday.

“China did not create the Ukraine crisis,” Wang said. “China was not a party to the crisis and did not provide weapons to either side.”

Everything China does is aimed at facilitating peace through dialogue, he said.

“China has no selfish interest regarding the Ukraine issue, but we have not sat idly by, added fuel to the fire or profited from it,” the ministry spokesperson said. “China urges the US to review its role in the Ukraine issue, stop adding fuel to the fire and shifting blame to China.”

The US was continuously pouring weapons into the battlefield and escalating the conflict, Wang said.

“Is it justice to let the conflict spread around the world?” he said.
