China firmly opposes whoever tries to contain the country’s development using products made from rare earths produced in China, a spokesperson for China’s top economic planner said Monday.

The global industrial chain is interconnected. Without cooperation, there will be no development and progress, said Meng Wei, a spokesperson of China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), in response to questions on whether rare earths will be used as a countermeasure in China-US trade frictions.

China has been actively maintaining the multilateral trading system, supporting economic globalization, adhering to the principle of openness, coordination and sharing to promote the development of China's rare earth industry, and is willing to meet the legitimate needs of other countries’ development with rare earth resources and products, Meng said.

Meng said that mutual benefits and a win-win situation need to be maintained by all parties. China firmly opposes some countries’ disregard of the rules of global trade and undermine the global industrial chain, Meng added.
