China opposes fabricating concepts of "market country" and "non-market country" outside the framework of WTO, Yang Yundong, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada, responded to local media's questions about Section 32.10 of US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), according to a statement the embassy posted on Friday.

The three North American Free Trade Agreement partners' new trade deal USMCA includes a controversial provision that if anyone of them enters a free trade deal with a "non-market" country, which is believed as an indirect reference to China, the others can quit the agreement in six months and form their own bilateral trade pact.

China firmly supports the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core and promotes an open world economy, but fabricating concepts outside the framework of WTO "in essence is an excuse made by some countries to shirk their obligations and refuse to meet their international commitments," the embassy statement said, calling it "a dishonest behavior."

The provision also caused disagreements in Canada. Conservative MP Michael Chong said the Liberals are giving up "a significant degree of sovereignty" in the USMCA deal, CBC reported on Friday.

"We now have to ask for Washington's permission to enter into trade negotiations with certain countries that the US will designate as non-market countries," he said, according to the report.
