China resolutely opposes the US for distorting facts and making exorbitant demands, said Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang at a routine press briefing Tuesday.

The US has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on $300 billion worth of exported Chinese products after raising tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods from 10 percent to 25 percent since May 5. It was said yesterday that a hearing will be held on June 17 to discuss further tariffs.

“China has shown the greatest sincerity in previous consultations, but the US has been distorting facts and making exorbitant demands, which is resolutely opposed by China,” said Geng.

“As China has stressed many times, raising tariffs never resolves any problem and will only hurt the US itself as well as others. Though a trade war is the last thing China wants, China is in no way afraid of fighting one,” said Geng.

“China never succumbs to external pressure. We have the resolve and capability to defend our lawful and legitimate rights and interests,” said Geng.

“China again urges US policymakers to heed the strong call of the international community and people from all walks of life, count the gains and losses of their own interests, return back to the right track as soon as possible and strive to achieve mutual benefits with China on the basis of mutual respect,” said Geng.
