China does not shy away from or fear competition, but opposes using competition to define the entirety of China-US relations and the practice of vilification and repression in the name of competition, a foreign ministry spokesperson said in Beijing on Wednesday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press briefing in Beijing in response to question about Biden's remarks on China in his State of the Union address.

“China has always believed that China-US relations are not a zero-sum game in which one gains and the other loses, the success of China and the United States represents opportunities rather than challenges to each other”, Mao said.

The earth is vast enough for the common development and prosperity of China and the United States, the spokesperson also said.

“China does not shy away from or fear competition, but opposes using competition to define the entirety of China-US relations,” she said. “It is not the behavior of a responsible major country to slander another country, restrict other countries’ legitimate development rights or even harm the global industrial and supply chains in the name of competition.”

Mao said that a sound and stable China-US relationship serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is the general expectation of the international community.

“The US should have an objective and rational understanding of China, pursue positive and pragmatic policies towards China, and work with China to bring China-US relations back to the track of sound and stable development, ”Mao emphasized.
