The Chinese Foreign Ministry questioned Canada’s political motive for the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, saying nothing will change the fact that Canada is acting in the disgraceful role as the accomplice and pawn of the US.

The remark came from spokesperson Zhao Lijian during a media conference on Friday following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’ s statement that he has no regrets about the arrest of Meng.

“Why Canada is the only country that ‘abides by’ its extradition treaty with the US on this matter while many other countries who have extradition treaties with the US do not get involved in the US dirty scheme and serve the US interest at the expense of their own people ?”  Zhao said.

China’s stance on Meng’s case is clear and firm, Zhao said. “Considering all these facts and suspects that have been disclosed right now, the truth that the arrest of Meng is an outright political case will never be changed, no matter how hard the Canadian government tries to cover up and mislead the public,” said Zhao.

"We also noticed that more and more insightful people in Canada, including politicians, lawyers, judges, and former diplomats, are calling for their government to make independent decisions to release Meng. We urge Canada's PM to heed to their voices of justice and reason,” Zhao added.
