China's decision to suspend rapeseed imports from a Canadian enterprise according to laws and international conventions is reasonable and legal, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Wednesday at a regular press conference.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland recently said that she did not believe there is any scientific basis to cancel the qualification of a Canadian enterprise to export rapeseeds to China.

China said it has detected dangerous pests in the rapeseeds imported from Canadian enterprises multiple times, and the problem with one of the enterprises is especially serious, said Lu Kang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

"We believe that as the largest exporter of rapeseeds in the world, Canada must know that dangerous pests pose a serious threat to agricultural production and ecological security," Lu said.

"The Chinese government needs to guarantee the health and safety of the people, as any other country," Lu said.
