China’s elderly to become a third of total population by 2050

China’s elderly population will be more than a quarter of the total population in 2035, and more than one-third in 2050, according to China’s Advancing Undertakings for the Aged, published by the China National Committee on Aging.

China's elderly population has increased by 118 million from 1999 to 2018, making China the only country where the senior population exceeds 200 million, according to the Report on Consumption and Demand of the Elderly from the Demand-side Perspective of the China National Committee on Aging early this year.

Aging laws and policies have been established. Elderly-care efforts has achieved tangible results. The system for the well-being of the elderly has been continuously refined. The development of old-age health services has been accelerated. China is promoting elderly-care undertakings in a balanced, coordinated and sustainable way.  

Chinese people aged 60 or above have exceeded 249 million by the end of 2018, accounting for 17.9% of the total population, an increase of 8.59 million from last year, according to data released in January this year by the National Bureau of Statistics.
