China's foreign ministry on Monday said the UK has no responsibility for Hong Kong now and urged the European country to stop its interventions in China's internal affairs.

Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remark at a daily news briefing after British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said his country would continue to press China to respect the terms under which control of Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997.

"The Sino-British Joint Declaration on Hong Kong has resolved issues left over from history, and all rights and obligation of the British side stipulated in it have all been fulfilled," Geng said. "Britain now has no responsibility for Hong Kong and the Hong Kong issue is completely China's internal affair."

Geng also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the UK for interfering in the Hong Kong issue and making irresponsible comments recently.

"We hope the UK could put itself in a proper position and do things that could benefit Hong Kong's stability and prosperity, not the other way around."
