China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that it strongly opposes U.S. sanctions on a Chinese energy firm for allegedly violating restrictions imposed on Iran's oil sector.

Hua Chunying, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, made the remarks after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States had sanctioned a Chinese energy company because it allegedly violated restrictions imposed on Iran's oil sector.

China resolutely opposes the unilateral sanctions and the so-called "long-arm jurisdiction" imposed by the U.S., said Hua.

The normal cooperation between Iran and other countries, including China, is reasonable and legal and must be respected and protected, Hua added.

China urges the U.S. to end the sanctions which violate international law.
