China to attend WHO meeting on the novel coronavirus

China will attend the meeting held by the World Health Organization to assess the conditions of the pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

"As far as I am concerned, on the night of January 22, Beijing time, China will, at the invitation of WHO, join other affected countriese in the meeting of the International Health Regulations Committees." Geng Shuang, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said at a regular press conference on Tuesday.

"China has taken the pneumonia outbreak seriously and carried out comprehensive deployment of prevention and control of the pneumonia epidemic." Geng said.

He added that China has informed the World Health Organization, relevant nations, regional organizations, and its Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions of the outbreak in a timely manner and maintained close communication with them.

On Jan.13, China has shared with the WHO the genetic sequence of the coronavirus for development specific diagnostic kits.

WHO said on Twitter that the meeting will determine "whether the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, and what recommendations should be made to manage it."
