China urges the Australian media to observe the professional code of ethics and stop making irresponsible remarks, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said on Tuesday.

The response comes after two Australian media, Nine Entertainment and public broadcaster ABC, broke Australia's strict defamation laws in their 2017 investigative report about Chinese-born businessman Chau Chak Wing. A federal judge ordered them to pay $450,000 in damages over reports and to withdraw related reports on their platforms.

Wang added that China commits to mutual respect, equality, and non-interference in China-Australia ties.

Some Australian media and journalists were dedicated to pure speculation and destroying China- Australia ties, Wang said, urging the related parts to abandon ideology bias.
