China on Tuesday urged the US to stop advancing its current relations with Taipei in any substantive way, and abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués.

US Assistant Secretary of State David R. Stilwell on Monday said the US is strengthening its relations with Taiwan by establishing a new economic dialogue. Stilwell added that the US government has declassified the Six Assurances, which was passed during the Reagan administration in 1982, and is still in effect along with the Taiwan Relations Act.

“The Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances are tools used by the US to interfere in China’s domestic affairs, and are thus null and void,”  Hua Chunying, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said at a regular press conference.  “The US should abide by the one-China policy and the three China-US joint communiqués, not the unilateral policies it made on the Taiwan matter.”

Hua noted that the Chinese government has opposed the two US documents from the start, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

“Taiwan concerns the core interests of China, and no one shall underestimate China’s determination to uphold its sovereignty and territory,” Hua said. “We warn the US not go further down the wrong path.”
