China’s foreign ministry on Friday urged the US to stop supporting or shielding anti-China forces in Hong Kong.

“The US attempt to undermine Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability and contain China’s development is doomed to fail,” ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a press briefing in Beijing.

Zhao made the remarks after China published a 6,000-word fact sheet enumerating US intervention in Hong Kong SAR affairs from February 2019 to July this year on the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

“The drafting and implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong improved the legal system of the city, restored safety and stability, and protected the legitimate rights of Hong Kong residents,” Zhao said. “Hong Kong turned to a new chapter of development.”

The US “must respect China’s sovereignty and abide by the international law and basic principles of international relations,” he said. “It must stop interfering in the affairs of Hong Kong and the internal affairs of China.”

Zhao warned US interests in the city would be severely compromised if the US supported anti-China forces in disrupting the city and that China would continue to hit back hard at US interference in Hong Kong affairs.
