“The US threat on slapping additional tariffs on Chinese goods will not intimidate Chinese people. Chinese people do not believe in evil, fear no oppression and will not take the threat lying down,” Geng Shuang, a spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on a Thursday press conference.

US President Donald Trump threatened China in a Wednesday interview that if a trade deal cannot be made during the G20 Osaka summit, US will levy additional tariffs on Chinese goods.

“China has always advocated to solving trade frictions through dialogue and consultation, but meanwhile, China will firmly defend its legitimate interests,” Geng said.

Geng adveised US that going on the trade war and hiking tariffs hurts both sides and will not solve the problem. I hope the US to listen to the domestic groups and US people’s voices of objecting trade war and tariff hike, listen to the global society’s voice of boycotting unilateralism, protectionism and bullying actions,” 

“We hope the US will meet China in half-way, take care of reasonable concerns from both sides on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, which not only matches the interests of the two countries and the people from them, it is also global society’s expectation,” Geng said.
