Wang Wenbin made the remarks in response to a recent article by Richard Haass, president of American think tank Council on Foreign Relations, who criticized US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library last Thursday, saying the top US diplomat was "decidedly undiplomatic" and failed to understand the history of US-China relations.

Wang said Pompeo distorted the China-US relations in the past four decades, launching another round of attacks and slandering the Communist Party of China, preaching an all-around containment of China. Such groundless accusations have been criticized and condemned by peace-loving and right-thinking people, including Americans.

"In his speech, Pompeo tried to incite anti-China forces, but he neglected the fact that in the 21st century, breeding hatred and stirring up rivalries goes against the trend of the times, and will never win people’s hearts. Pompeo doesn't represent democracy or freedom, but stands up for US hegemony and the interest groups behind him," he added.

Wang cited several international surveys and polls to hit back at Pompeo, showing that his claim that the CPC "designs for hegemony" is not only out of pure ignorance, but also prejudice. For example, according to the latest survey by the Harvard Kennedy School, the CPC enjoys the highest rate of support and satisfaction among the Chinese people--over 93 percent.

Wang noted that the goal of the CPC is the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, instead of replacing the US. The international status of the US is ultimately its own doing.

"Half a century since then US President Richard Nixon visited China, the history of bilateral relations proves that only with mutual respect can China-US relations develop at a steady and healthy pace. China was never meant to change the US, and neither will the US be capable of changing China," said Wang.
