China will take immediate measures to safeguard its legitimate rights in response the US’ unilateral tariff policy, Geng Shuang, spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said during his regular press conference on Friday.

He repeated a statement, issued by China in early June, after trade consultations between two countries' high-level delegations, that said, "All economic and trade outcomes of the talks will not take effect if the US side imposes any trade sanctions including raising tariffs.”

"China's position has always been consistent. If the US side adopts unilateral and protectionist measures and damages China's interests, China will immediately react and take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," said Geng.

China and the US stay in communication on economic and trade issues, including consultations on trade friction, and the two countries have achieved some progress, said Geng.
